Fight the Chill with Hot Cereal

Brrrr! We’ve been waking up to truly chilly mornings the past few weeks! For us, this calls for one breakfast food above all others: hot cereal.

Sure, it’s easy to whip up instant versions of your favorite oatmeal. (In fact, we offer a yummy maple and brown sugar version in our online store.) However, we’ve found a quick and easy way to make heart-healthy, filling hot cereal if you prefer from-scratch methods. Our recipe makes a single serving and is incredibly customizable.

Mix ¼ of a cup of toasted wheat germ and ⅓ of a cup of rolled oats in a small saucepan, then pour in 1¼ cups of water. Stir the mixture and place it on the stove over medium heat.

Bring the cereal to a low boil, then turn the heat down to low and stir it for a minute or two until it thickens. Remove the hot cereal from the heat and add some brown sugar, stevia powder or honey to sweeten. We also like to stir in a few chopped cinnamon apple wedges, some whole dried cranberries and some toasted walnut pieces for good measure. However, we’ve found that just about any type of nuts or dried fruit is tasty in this breakfast treat!

What are some of the ingredients you like to add to hot cereal? Do you have a favorite recipe?

I wish you guys could import Red River cereal from the Canadian prairies!!! Delicious and amazingly healthy, it’s a mix of wheat, rye, and flax. They feed it to kids in school breakfast programs, as well as serve it at the five-star Vistas dining room at the Banff Centre. Add brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, fruit… a Canadian hot breakfast favorite for sure!
