There are so many reasons we love green tea. It has a rich, complex taste that awakens the senses and helps us stay alert and focused. Green tea is extremely rich in protective antioxidants and other nutrients that are good for your health. Join us as we explore the many health benefits of green tea and give you the scoop on our different types of green tea powders.

Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is extremely rich in catechins, powerful antioxidants that protect cells against the oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This type of cell damage has been linked to chronic conditions like heart disease and cancer. One such catechin found in green tea is known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and may have protective anti-cancer effects, as suggested by animal and clinical studies. EGCG is an even more potent antioxidant than vitamin C or E, and has been shown to help green tea drinkers reduce body fat.

Green tea also contains high levels of amino acids, especially, L-theanine, which reduces stress levels, improves focus and keeps the mind sharp. The natural caffeine levels in green tea, combined with the presence of L-theanine, are ideal for creating a mental state of relaxed alertness. Green tea is a great source of energy for people that find the caffeine content of coffee makes them too jittery. It is also rich in chlorophyll, a natural cleansing and detoxifying agent that binds to heavy metals and other toxins to expel them from the body.

Types of Green Tea Powder

1) Green Tea Powder

This is our most basic form of green tea powder. It has a clean, earthy flavor that is perfect for making a cup of hot tea or using in your recipes. This green tea powder is non-GMO and contains no additives. We love mixing it in baked treats like cookies and muffins to get that signature green tea flavor. The difference between this green tea powder and our 100% Matcha green tea powder is in where it comes from and how it is produced.

2) 100% Matcha Green Tea Powder

Matcha green tea powder is one of the highest grades of tea in the world. Our 100% GRADE A Premium Usacha Matcha green tea is imported from Shizuoka, Japan, where it is grown and produced in limited quantities. Unlike other varieties of green tea, matcha leaves are carefully shaded from sunlight for 3 weeks before they are harvested.

This extra measure causes the leaves to become very tender, which produces a deep, rich flavor and high chlorophyll content. At this point, the youngest, most tender leaves are picked and separated from stems. The whole leaves are steamed once, and air-dried before they are finely ground into a powder. The special care that is taken to prepare matcha green tea ensures that they retain extremely high levels of the catechin, EGCG.

This is one of the reasons that Matcha green tea powder tends to be more expensive than other varieties of green tea. A 2003 study published in the Journal of Chromatography found that the concentration of EGCG in matcha green tea is 137 times higher than a common form of green tea.
