Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe {Vegan}

This vegan matcha green tea latte recipe was developed exclusively for Nuts.com and our customers by Miryam Quinn Doblas, Registered Dietitian (RD). Miryam shares her passion for nutrition and healthy eating on her website, Eat Good 4 Life.

There’s something so comforting about a matcha green tea latte – a healthy beverage that’s creamy and sweet with the slightly earthy taste of matcha in every sip. I’ve seen many variations of green tea latte recipes, but I wanted to create one that is easy to prepare, vegan, and low in sugar. It only takes five minutes to make this dairy-free matcha green tea latte recipe from the comfort of your own home.

Popular coffee shops make matcha lattes that taste good, but unfortunately they are often loaded with sweeteners and unhealthy additives. They usually don’t use high quality matcha green tea either. That’s why I prefer to make my matcha latte recipes at home with 100% matcha green tea powder.

Matcha is not your average green tea. Traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, it is renowned for having a high level of antioxidants known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The key to matcha green tea’s health benefits, EGCG protects cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals; it provides even more antioxidant protection than vitamin C or E. One cup of matcha has as many antioxidants as 10 cups of regular green tea!

Antioxidants aren’t the only reason to love matcha green tea. Matcha also provides L-theanine, an amino acid that helps relieve stress and reduce anxiety. L-theanine, combined with the tea’s natural caffeine content, promotes a state of relaxed alertness. That’s a pretty good reason to swap out a cup of coffee for a cup of matcha before a big exam or presentation.

High-quality matcha is a bright green color, thanks to its rich source of chlorophyll, which cleanses the body by binding to heavy metals and other toxins. If you’re making a detox smoothie at home, make sure to add a few teaspoons of matcha for its cleansing properties. Many people don’t realize just how versatile matcha green tea can be! I’ve incorporated its green goodness into smoothies, cakes, muffins, and pancake batter. When summer rolls around, I also like adding it to frozen treats like homemade ice cream and popsicles.

Speaking of warmer weather, if you’d like to turn this into an iced matcha green tea latte recipe, you can certainly do that by using chilled almond and coconut milk. Add it to a glass with some ice, and you’re all set! For now, I’ll be enjoying this matcha green tea latte served hot with a dollop of coconut cream on top.

    Is the coconut milk the canned coconut milk, or the coconut milk in a carton?
