Turkey Day Treats: Roasted Chestnuts
As Thanksgiving draws near, we’d like to take the month of November to discuss some of our favorite recipes for this very special holiday. Today, we’re going to talk roasted chestnuts. NutsOnline stocks fresh chestnuts that are perfect for making this treat!
You may have purchased roasted chestnuts from a street vendor or specialty nut shop during past holiday seasons, but did you know that it’s incredibly easy to roast them at home, in your own kitchen? All you need are a few simple supplies to get going!
To start, place a cutting board on a flat, level surface and put your first chestnut on the board, so that it’s resting on its flat side. Use a sharp knife to slice a small slit in the top of the chestnut, and repeat this process with all the other nuts. The slit allows steam to escape. Without it, the chestnuts would explode in your oven!
Layer the chestnuts, with the slits pointing up, on a baking sheet and bake them at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 15 minutes. Pull them out of the oven when their skins start to peel back and let them cool for five to 10 minutes.
Peel the chestnuts by inserting your fingernail into the slit and pulling away the outer and inner skin. Be careful not to burn yourself!
Store the cooled roasted chestnuts in an airtight container for several days, or eat them as soon as they’re peeled. Besides making a great appetizer, these yummy nuts are a fantastic addition to baked goods over the Thanksgiving holiday.
