8 Everyday Coconut Oil Uses

We’re highlighting 8 of our favorite everyday coconut oil uses! Coconut oil is revered as a healthy plant-based oil. It’s loaded with lauric acid, which is known to support the immune system and improve metabolism. Coconut oil is also comprised of medium-chain fatty acids which can be readily converted to energy instead of fat. Outside of its place in the kitchen, did you know that coconut oil is considered a miracle beauty product? There’s no limit to what it can do for your overall health!

1) Cooking and Baking

By far the most popular use of coconut oil is for cooking and baking, thanks to its high smoke point and nutritional benefits. Coconut oil has a smoke point of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which means it can be used for cooking, baking, and stir-frying. It also works well as a dairy-free replacement for butter in making cakes, muffins, pancakes, and other baked goods. Simply use it as a one-to-one substitute for butter or vegetable oils in your cooking.

2) Skin Moisturizer

Keep your skin soft and supple with luscious cold-pressed organic extra virgin coconut oil. A 2004 study published in the journal Dermatitis found that coconut oil is just as safe and effective as mineral oil when used as a moisturizer. It significantly improved skin hydration and reduced water loss in participants with a dry skin condition. To apply coconut oil to the face, rub a small amount into your hand until warm and melted. Then gently massage it onto your skin. For the body, emulsify a generous amount in your hands and smooth it over dry areas for a boost of moisture.

3) Facial Cleanser

Although it may seem counterintuitive, coconut oil is actually a tried-and-true method for cleansing the face of excess oil, dirt and impurities. Coconut oil naturally cleanses pores while balancing the skin’s natural oils to prevent overdrying. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can treat acne and other skin conditions. To clean your face with coconut oil, first warm up a teaspoon of the oil between your fingers. Take a minute to massage the oil over your face in small, circular motions. Warm a clean washcloth by running it under warm water and wringing it out. Place the washcloth over your face for about 30 seconds to let the steam open your pores and help remove impurities. Pat your face dry, and enjoy your clean, refreshed and moisturized skin!

4) Makeup Remover

Looking for an all natural makeup remover that can even take off waterproof mascara? Coconut oil is just what you need! Gentle enough to use around the eyes, coconut oil can remove even the most stubborn makeup without all the rubbing and tugging. It moisturizes and soothes skin, while breaking up the water-resistant substances found in mascara and eyeshadow for effortless removal. Simply warm a small amount of coconut oil in your hands, and rub it over the skin around the eyes and on your face. Let it sit for a few moments and then, using a cotton pad, wipe away the makeup and excess oil. Your skin is left makeup-free and moisturized!

5) Hair Mask

As a hair conditioner, coconut oil is known to penetrate the hair shaft better than other oils. The fatty acids in coconut oil protect the hair from losing proteins, which results in stronger and healthier hair. Coconut oil also lends the hair a healthy shine and can prevent split ends. For a moisturizing hair mask that will leave your hair feeling softer and silkier, start with a small amount of coconut oil. Warm it up between your hands and work it throughout your hair, starting at the roots and finishing at the ends. Leave it in for a minimum of 5 minutes before washing it out. For a deep conditioning effect, tie your coconut oiled hair into a loose bun, place it in a shower cap, and leave the coconut oil in overnight. In the morning, wash it out in the shower and prepare to be amazed by your gorgeous hair.

6) Body Scrub

Make your own coconut oil body scrub for tropical exfoliation. When used on a regular basis, exfoliation can get rid of dead skin cells, improve complexion and skin tone, and reveal more youthful skin. To make your scrub, mix equal parts sugar and coconut oil together. Combine thoroughly and store in an airtight glass jar. Use 1 tablespoon in the shower as needed. Be sure to wash the excess coconut oil out of your shower after each use to prevent slippery surfaces.

7) Shaving Cream

Many beauty experts prefer coconut oil over regular shaving cream. It provides a smooth, close shave with the added benefit of being a moisturizer. It also doesn’t build up on the razor blade like regular shaving cream. Try it out for yourself! Rub a small amount of coconut oil on the legs and shave with a sharp razor for unbelievably smooth skin. After rinsing the excess, make sure to wipe down the shower tub so that the surface doesn’t become slippery.

8) Added to Coffee

Is the energy boost from your morning cup of coffee just not cutting it? For an extra boost of energy as well as improved metabolism and a stronger immune system, add some coconut oil to your next cup of jo. A 2009 study published in the journal Lipids found that participants who supplemented their diets with coconut oil significantly reduced their BMI and waist circumference. They also experienced an increase in good “HDL” cholesterol. As an added bonus, coconut oil will make your coffee nice and frothy. To prepare, simply add one teaspoon of coconut oil to your cup of coffee. Pour them into a blender or food processor, and blend until combined. You can eventually build your way up to 1 tablespoon per day.
