Detox Smoothie Recipe {Vegan}

This vegan detox smoothie recipe was developed exclusively for Nuts.com and our customers by Miryam Quinn Doblas, Registered Dietitian (RD). Miryam shares her passion for nutrition and healthy eating on her website, Eat Good 4 Life.

I love making smoothies in the morning to start my day off right. Smoothies are also great for people who don’t like to spend time making breakfast because they’re super convenient and can be enjoyed on-the-go. This detox smoothie is energizing and delicious – the perfect complement to a healthy lifestyle.

Smoothies are one of the easiest ways to incorporate more superfoods into your diet. Throw everything together in a blender and voila – you’ve created a nutritious pick-me-up in no time at all! The superfood star of this smoothie is spirulina. Spirulina is an algae that contains high levels of chlorophyll, the purifying nutrient that is responsible for giving spirulina its dark green hue. Thanks to chlorophyll, spirulina is an excellent detoxifying and cleansing agent.

Chlorophyll works to remove toxins from the body, while the other nutrients in spirulina provide an overall health boost. Since spirulina contains an ideal balance of all nine essential amino acids, it is considered a complete protein. This makes spirulina an excellent option for vegans and vegetarians. Spirulina’s easy-to-digest protein is also beneficial after workouts. Its impressive health benefits don’t stop there though. Per ounce, the antioxidant concentration of spirulina is even higher than that of blueberries. Take that, free radicals! Spirulina also provides nearly half of the daily value for iron in a one-ounce serving, along with small amounts of other vitamins and minerals.

For more protein, feel free to add a spoonful of hemp protein powder to your smoothie. It packs a whopping 15 grams of plant-based protein per serving. For a special presentation, I like to dress up my smoothies with superfood toppings like chia seeds and hemp hearts. They lend an additional source of protein, as well as anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

This gorgeous and refreshing smoothie is a fantastic way to cleanse and nourish the body. It’s the perfect basic detox smoothie that you can make with other green powders like chlorella, wheatgrass or moringa. My recipe makes enough for two servings but feel free to double or triple the recipe for the whole family! Enjoy!

      Coconut water with pulp from Taste Nirvana or an organic coconut milk in BPA-free can would be a great substitute for almond milk.
